About the project
Take a Break invited real parents and pregnancy models to contribute stories about humorous or unusual pregnancy announcements.
One participating couple were cosplayers who announced their pregnancy dressed as Doctor Who characters while revealing that two heartbeats had been detected. The feature combined a short interview with supplied or commissioned photography.
Because the assignment was built around genuine experiences, contributors needed to provide an accurate account as well as photographs that clearly supported their story. The nationwide brief allowed suitable families to be considered without being based near a single studio location.
Editorial assignments of this kind differ from conventional fashion modelling: the personal story is the main reason for selection, while the photography helps the publication present that story clearly and sensitively.
