Child Actor Self-Tape Guide

A clear self-tape does not need expensive equipment: follow the brief, make the child easy to see and hear, and keep the performance natural.

The essentials

Follow the casting instructions first

Every request is different. Read the full brief before filming and follow its directions for framing, scenes, eyeline, slate, file name, deadline and delivery method.

An adult should be present whenever a person under 18 records a self-tape or attends an online audition. Keep personal information and casting material private.

Keep it simpleA neutral background and even front lighting are normally enough.
Limit pressureA few prepared takes are better than filming until the child is frustrated.

Camera and room

Set up a clear, distraction-free shot

  • Film horizontally unless the casting brief explicitly requests another format.
  • Place the camera at the child's eye level on a tripod or stable surface.
  • Use a plain background with no windows, posters or identifiable private information.
  • Light the face from the front or side; do not position the child in front of a bright window.
  • Record a short test and listen with headphones to check speech, echo and background noise.

Performance

Help without over-directing

Understand the scene

Discuss who the character is speaking to and what they want. The emotional journey matters more than a rigid recitation.

Use a quiet reader

The reader should sit close to the camera and support the scene without acting over the child or appearing in frame unless requested.

Keep the eyeline natural

Unless instructed to look into the lens, the child normally looks slightly to one side towards the reader.

Take a break

If the tape is becoming stressful, stop and return later. More takes do not automatically produce a better performance.

Slate and privacy

Include only the details requested

A casting brief may request a short introduction, profile shots or other information. Supply exactly what is requested through the approved channel. Do not add a home address, school, personal contact details or unrelated information.

Confidentiality: scripts, character details and production information may be confidential. Do not publish the self-tape or brief on social media.

Before sending

Review the file once

  1. Check picture and sound

Make sure the correct scene is complete, in focus and easy to hear.

  2. Keep editing minimal

Trim obvious dead time and join scenes only if requested. Avoid music, filters, titles or effects.

  3. Name the file correctly

Follow the supplied naming convention so the casting team can identify it.

  4. Use the requested delivery method

Upload or send the file to the agency or casting platform before the deadline; do not substitute a public social-media link.
